Get those funny looking scissors that have a cover on one side of the blades with loops. This way only certain hairs will be cut. It's an easy way to thin hair, and also to give the cut a fringed look so it is natural.
Not that you would want the ones in source -- but at least you can see a picture. You can get them much less expensive.
